Privacy policy

Your music, and what you play, stay yours.

SheetScroll collects nothing about you. This page says exactly what the app does with your music, your microphone and your network, and what little ever leaves your device.

Effective 4 October 2026

In short

  • No account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no SheetScroll server that holds your data.
  • Sound from the microphone is analysed on your device as it arrives. It is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
  • Your scores, markings, setlists and practice history stay on your device. If you turn on sync, they also go to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, end-to-end encrypted so that only your devices can read them.
  • Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.

Who we are

SheetScroll is made and published by Spencer Churchill, an individual developer (“we”, “us” in this policy). This policy covers the SheetScroll app on every platform it ships on and this website, sheetscroll.com. You can reach us at support@sheetscroll.com.

What we collect

Nothing. SheetScroll does not collect, receive or store personal data, usage data, diagnostics or device identifiers. It contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and it does not share data with data brokers or anyone else. We have no server that your library, your recordings (there are none) or your settings could be sent to.

The only way we ever receive anything about you is if you write to us (see Contact).

What happens on your device

Everything SheetScroll does with your music happens on the device in front of you, and it works the same in airplane mode:

  • Importing and reading. PDFs, photos and score files you add are copied into the app’s own storage and read there. SheetScroll never edits the original file.
  • Following. The listening engine and its models run on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere to work out where you are in the music.
  • Your library. Scores, annotations, setlists, settings and practice history are stored in the app’s storage on your device. Deleting the app deletes them, unless you have a backup or sync turned on.
  • “That turn was wrong” reports. If you report a turn, SheetScroll saves a short log of what it decided (never audio) on your device. It goes somewhere only if you choose to share it, with the share sheet, to wherever you pick.
  • Asking for a rating. Now and then, after you finish with a piece, the iPhone and iPad app asks Apple to show its rating prompt. To pick a calm moment it keeps a few counts on your device (the days you used SheetScroll, the pieces you played, when it last asked) and never sends them anywhere. Whether the prompt appears, and any rating you give, are between you and Apple.

Microphone

SheetScroll asks for the microphone so it can hear where you are in the music and turn the page. Sound is analysed as it arrives and then discarded: it is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and no audio is kept to improve the app.

The microphone is on only while a score is open in the player and SheetScroll is in front; the system shows its recording indicator while it is. Stop, close the score or switch apps and it turns off. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your device’s settings; SheetScroll then works as a reader, with page turns by pedal or tap. If you connect a digital piano over MIDI, SheetScroll follows the notes it sends, which are handled the same way.

Camera

The camera is used for two things, and only when you ask: to scan or photograph printed sheet music into your library, and to scan a band leader’s code to follow their page turns. Scans are stored on your device like any other score. Nothing the camera sees is sent anywhere.

Local network (playing together)

When you lead or follow other musicians’ devices, SheetScroll finds them on your local network (Wi-Fi) and keeps your pages turning together. Your device asks for permission the first time you lead or follow, never before.

  • Only bar positions travel between the devices: never your music, your markings or any sound.
  • Every connection is end-to-end encrypted and authenticated. Only devices that scanned the leader’s code, opened its link or entered its short code can join, and other devices on the network cannot read or alter what is sent.
  • To be found, a leading device announces itself on the local network with its device name and a random session number, as AirPlay and printers do. Nothing goes to the internet or to us.

Sync and backups

Sync is off until you turn it on in Settings. When you do, SheetScroll keeps your library the same on your devices through storage you already have: your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive (where your device offers it), or, on a computer, a folder you choose. There is no SheetScroll account and no SheetScroll server in between.

  • End-to-end encrypted. Everything SheetScroll writes to your cloud is encrypted on your device (AES-256-GCM) with keys only your devices hold. Apple, Google or anyone else who holds the files cannot read them; even file names reveal nothing about your scores. We cannot read them either, and we never receive them.
  • What your cloud provider can see. Like any app that stores files, they see that encrypted files exist, their sizes and when they change. Your use of iCloud or Google Drive is governed by Apple’s or Google’s own privacy policy.
  • Google Drive. SheetScroll asks only for access to its own hidden app folder in your Drive, not to your other files. The sign-in happens in Google’s own sign-in screen, and the access it grants stays on your device.
  • Your key. iPhones and iPads signed in to the same Apple Account share the library’s key through iCloud Keychain; another device joins only when one of yours approves it. You can also write down a recovery code in Settings → Sync; anyone with that code can read your synced library, so keep it private.
  • Turning it off. Turn off sync in Settings at any time. To remove the synced copy, delete the SheetScroll folder from your iCloud Drive or remove SheetScroll’s app data in your Google Drive settings.

Backups (Settings → Storage → Backup) are a single file that you save wherever you choose. They are not encrypted, so store them as you would the music itself.

Purchases

The reader is free. SheetScroll Pro (listening and automatic page turns) is sold as an in-app purchase. On iPhone and iPad it is bought through Apple’s App Store; Apple handles the payment, the subscription and its renewal, cancellation and refunds under its own terms and privacy policy.

We never receive your name, email address or payment details. The app checks on your device, with Apple’s StoreKit, whether you have Pro. Apple gives us sales and financial reports that do not identify you.

Other services and platforms

  • Android. Where the Android app offers scanning paper music with the camera, it uses Google’s ML Kit document scanner, part of Google Play services, which sends Google usage information about the scanner under Google’s terms. The scanned pages themselves stay on your device.
  • This website has no cookies, no trackers and no analytics, and loads nothing from anyone else. Like every website, it is delivered by a hosting provider (Cloudflare), which processes your IP address and request details to deliver the page and protect it from abuse. We do not use that information to identify you.
  • Downloads and app stores. When you download SheetScroll from an app store or another site, that service’s own privacy policy applies to the download.

Children

SheetScroll is suitable for musicians of every age, including children learning an instrument. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children. It has no account, no chat, no advertising and no way for users to contact one another. Purchases on Apple devices go through Apple, including Ask to Buy for children in a Family Sharing group. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, write to us and we will delete it.

Your choices and rights

Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export or delete, and nothing is sold or shared. You stay in control on your device: you can withdraw the microphone, camera and local network permissions in your device’s settings, turn sync off, and delete your library by deleting the app. Wherever you live, including under the GDPR in the EU and UK and under US state privacy laws, you may contact us with any question or request about your data, and we will answer.

If you email us, we use your email address and what you write only to reply to you, and we delete the conversation when it is no longer needed to help you, or sooner if you ask.

Changes to this policy

If what SheetScroll does with data changes, we will update this page and its effective date before the change reaches the app. If a change would ever mean collecting something, the app will ask you first.
