SheetScroll vs forScore

SheetScroll turns the page for you: with Pro it listens as you play and turns two beats before the end, never early. forScore lists no listening turn: every turn is yours to trigger. It also runs on Android, Windows, Linux and the web, opens far more formats, and its reader is free. forScore costs $24.99, on Apple devices only.

Page turning: SheetScroll turns it for you

This is the biggest difference. SheetScroll Pro turns the page for you. It listens through the microphone, or follows a digital piano's notes over USB or Bluetooth MIDI, and turns two beats before the end of the page. It never turns early: when two passages sound alike, it holds the page until the music tells them apart. It follows repeat signs, first and second endings, D.S. and coda, and finds you again after you stop or go back.

SheetScroll’s web app following a recording of the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, with nothing scripted. The page turns two beats before its end. Sound: an excerpt of “Cello Suite – Bach” by Lud and Schlatts Musical Emporium, conducted by Philip Milman, CC BY 3.0. Score: PDMX, CC0.

forScore leaves every turn to you: a Bluetooth page turner, MIDI signals, an Apple Watch running the Cue app, or, with forScore Pro, a wink, a mouth movement or a head turn on devices with face tracking. Each still asks you to pick the moment while you play.

In SheetScroll you keep a manual turn too: pedals and taps work alongside listening, and a pedal press or a tap always wins.

Where SheetScroll is ahead

  • Turns the page for you, with Pro: by microphone or a digital piano over MIDI, for piano, keyboards, strings, woodwinds, brass, voice and guitar, through repeats, endings, D.S. and coda.
  • Runs everywhere: Android phones and tablets, Windows, Linux and the web as well as Apple devices, with the same listening and look on each.
  • Older Apple devices too: iPadOS and iOS 15 or later, and macOS 12 or later; forScore needs iPadOS 18 and macOS 15.
  • More formats: besides PDFs, photos and scans of paper music, MusicXML, MuseScore, Guitar Pro, MIDI, ABC, MEI, Humdrum, chord charts and text tabs.
  • Free reader: every format and view, annotations, setlists and pedal turns cost nothing. forScore costs $24.99 up front.
  • Practice that listens: loops, hands separately and tempo history.
  • Play together: one device listens and everyone's pages turn with it over Wi-Fi; only the leading device needs Pro.
  • Learn to play: eight free courses of public-domain pieces, from the first notes, that listen and turn without Pro.

What forScore adds on Apple hardware

  • Apple hardware. Apple Pencil hover gestures (squeeze on Apple Pencil Pro with forScore Pro), Apple Vision Pro, and page turns from an Apple Watch.
  • Face gestures in forScore Pro, as a trigger you make yourself.
  • Play-along. forScore can play along with an audio track.
  • One purchase for its Apple platforms, with forScore Pro sold as a separate subscription.

Privacy

In SheetScroll, sound is analyzed on the device as it arrives and is never recorded, stored or sent. There is no account and no tracking, and everything works offline.

Bring your forScore library

Your forScore library comes with you: export the metadata CSV from forScore's Backups panel, put it with your PDFs and any .4ss setlist files in one folder, and choose Add → From another app. Titles, tags and setlists come with it. See Move from forScore or MobileSheets.

Which to choose

  • SheetScroll if you want the page turned for you, play on any device, or read more than PDFs. The reader is free, and Pro's yearly plan starts with 2 weeks free.
  • forScore only if you need what is tied to Apple hardware: Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch turns or Pencil hover gestures.
