How is the clarinet course ordered?

Pieces 1 to 9 stay below the break. The course starts with written E, D and C, then adds notes in the order clarinet methods do.

  1. Pieces 1 to 4: E, D, C in Hot Cross Buns, then open G, then F, then five notes, C to G.
  2. Pieces 5 to 8: eighth notes in Jingle Bells, then low B, A and G, the low register, and G to G in Ode to Joy.
  3. Piece 9: Good King Wenceslas adds the throat A, F-sharp and C-sharp.
  4. Pieces 10 and 11: Amazing Grace crosses the break, with B and D, and Brahms’s Lullaby plays above it in 3/4.
  5. Pieces 12 to 15: Greensleeves in 6/8 and A minor, the staccato theme of In the Hall of the Mountain King, the dotted rhythms of Dvořák’s Largo, and a whole minuet.

What will I learn?

  • The low register first, then the throat notes, then the break.
  • Eighth notes and 3/4 time before 6/8, then accidentals and staccato.
  • Dotted rhythms and long phrases in the last pieces.
  • A written range of G3 to B5.

The pieces are in written pitch, what you read on a B-flat clarinet. They sound a whole step lower, and SheetScroll knows this, so it listens for the sound the part makes. You do not need to change a setting. The pieces are public domain, in our own CC0 encodings, checked against editions.

How do I begin?

In an empty library tap Learn an instrument, or open Setlists → Learn → Clarinet. One tap imports the pieces and makes Learn clarinet. Piece one opens, listening. Each piece’s note says what it adds.

How should I practice with it?

  • Spend time on pieces 1 to 9 before the break. A steady low tone makes the later pieces easier.
  • At the throat notes in Good King Wenceslas, play one phrase slowly and repeat it.
  • Take Amazing Grace slowly the first time. It is the first piece to cross the break.
  • If SheetScroll shows Not sure while you cross the break, keep playing, or tap the bar you are on.
  • Mark breath points with the Breath mark stamp.
