How do I set up SheetScroll, and what if it doesn’t hear me?

Open SheetScroll, watch the short demo, then open a score: SheetScroll asks for the microphone, says why, and follows as you play. If something is in the way, the status line offers Fix, which shows the fix for your device. Every fix is also below, with pictures, for each device.

What does SheetScroll do?

SheetScroll shows your sheet music and listens as you play. It follows you bar by bar and turns the page two beats before its end, so you never stop to turn.

The web app following a recording of the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, with nothing scripted. The page turns two beats before its end. Sound: an excerpt of “Cello Suite – Bach” by Lud and Schlatts Musical Emporium, conducted by Philip Milman, CC BY 3.0. Score: PDMX, CC0.
  • It follows you, not a metronome. Slow down, stop or go back, and it waits.
  • Never early. When it isn’t sure where you are, it holds the page.
  • You can always turn yourself. A swipe, a tap or a Bluetooth pedal turns the page at any time.

How do I get the best page turns?

The device on the music stand near the instrument, its microphone uncovered.
  • Put the device near your instrument, on the stand you read from. Keep its microphone uncovered: not behind the stand’s ledge, a thick case or your hand.
  • Use the device’s own microphone, not earbuds or a headset: their microphone is far from your instrument.
  • Start from the top, or tap the bar you start on. SheetScroll finds you as you play.
  • Keep playing when it holds the page. The music usually tells it where you are. Searching or lost? Tap your bar.
  • A digital piano? Connect it by USB or Bluetooth MIDI, and SheetScroll follows the notes themselves. See the MIDI help.
  • Scans: photograph the whole page, flat and bright. A publisher’s PDF or MusicXML reads best.
  • Keep SheetScroll in front. It listens only while a score is open and the app is on screen, and keeps the screen awake meanwhile.

What does the setup check do?

The setup check opens when you tap Fix on the status line, or from Settings → Listening → Check your setup. It takes about a minute.

  1. Microphone: it opens the microphone, and asks for it if SheetScroll never did. Sound stays on your device and is never recorded.
  2. Hears your instrument: play a few notes. A meter shows what the microphone hears, and the note it heard. A digital piano that plays a few notes passes too.
  3. Ready: three things worth knowing, then back to your music.

If something is in the way, it names it and shows this device’s fix, with a picture of where to tap and Open Settings where the system allows. Come back after the fix and it checks again by itself.

The microphone hears nothing

The microphone is allowed, but it gives SheetScroll complete silence. Something on the device has turned it off or is holding it. The setup check opens it again once by itself first.

Android
  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen. If Mic access (or Microphone access) is off, tap it. Android then gives every app silence, even with the permission allowed.
  2. Can’t find the tile? Open Settings, search for Microphone access, and turn it on.
  3. End any call, and close video call, voice chat and recording apps: Android gives them the microphone first.
  4. On a child’s device, ask a parent to allow the microphone in Family Link.
  5. Still silent? Restart the device.

  3. Still silent? Restart the iPhone or iPad.
Mac
  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and turn on SheetScroll, or your browser. A Mac app that isn’t allowed hears silence.
  2. A MacBook with its lid closed, or a Mac mini? Open the lid, or plug in a microphone.
  3. In System Settings → Sound → Input, pick your microphone and raise Input volume.

Linux and Chromebooks
  1. Linux: open your system’s sound settings → Input, pick your microphone, unmute it and raise its volume.
  2. Chromebook: open Settings → Privacy and security → Privacy controls, and turn on Microphone access. Some models have a microphone switch.

No microphone found

  • Mac mini, Mac Studio, or a MacBook with its lid closed: they have no microphone to use. Plug in a USB microphone, or open the lid.
  • Windows, Linux and desktops: plug in a microphone, a webcam with one, or a headset, then try again.
  • Phones and tablets: restart the device, then try again.

The microphone didn’t start

  • Another app may be using the microphone. Close calls, recorders and music apps, then tap Try again.
  • On Windows, check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone too: both switches on.
  • Still not working? Restart the device.

SheetScroll can’t hear my instrument

The microphone works, but your playing is too faint for it. The setup check’s meter shows what it hears.

  • Move the device closer to your instrument.
  • Keep the microphone uncovered. Most phones’ is on the bottom edge; on a stand’s ledge it can be blocked.
  • Play a few notes a little louder.
  • On a computer, raise the microphone’s input volume in the system’s sound settings.
On a computer, the microphone is often above the screen: bring the instrument and the computer close.

It’s listening through my earbuds or headset

When earbuds or a Bluetooth headset are connected, the system may use their microphone, which is far from your instrument and sounds like a phone call. The setup check names the microphone it hears.

Use the device’s own microphone, not the earbuds’.
  • Take the earbuds or headset off, or turn off their Bluetooth, then tap Try again.
  • On a computer, pick the built-in microphone in Settings → Listening → Microphone, or in the system’s sound settings.

How do I pick another microphone?

Settings → Listening → Microphone lists the microphones SheetScroll can use. System default follows your device’s choice. The setup check offers the same list when it hears nothing or too little.

Names like Steam Streaming Microphone, Stereo Mix, NVIDIA Broadcast or Voicemeeter are virtual devices, which often bring no sound. Pick your real microphone.

It hears me, but it doesn’t follow or turn

  • Listening is part of SheetScroll Pro. The courses listen free, and the first score that needs Pro listens free for its first session. See SheetScroll Pro.
  • Not sure or Lost on the status line? Keep playing, or tap the bar you’re on. See how SheetScroll listens.
  • A scan: if notes were read wrongly, take the photo again, flat and bright, or use a PDF or MusicXML of the piece.
  • Chord charts turn by pedal or tap; they don’t listen.
  • Want more warning before a turn? Change Turn early by in Settings → View and turns. See page turns.

The screen goes dark while I play

  • SheetScroll keeps the screen on while a score is open.
  • In a browser, keep its tab in front: a hidden tab can’t keep the screen on or listen.
  • On an iPhone, Low Power Mode may lock the screen after 30 seconds in Safari: turn it off while you play.

My Bluetooth pedal doesn’t turn pages

  • Pair the pedal in your device’s Bluetooth settings, as a keyboard.
  • SheetScroll takes Page Down, the right and down arrows and the space bar for Next page; Page Up and the left and up arrows for Previous page. Settings → Pedals and keyboard learns any other key.
  • The first press after a break may only wake the pedal.
  • A pedal counts as a keyboard, so the on-screen keyboard may hide. On an iPad, AirTurn pedals bring it back with their power button; on Android, turn on Show on-screen keyboard under Physical keyboard.

More in the pedal guide.

I bought Pro, but listening is still locked

  • iPhone, iPad and Android from Google Play: tap Restore purchases where Pro is offered.
  • Computers, the web, or Android from sheetscroll.com: go to Settings → SheetScroll Pro → Enter license key and paste the key from your receipt email.

More in SheetScroll Pro.

In the setup check, tap Still stuck? Email us: the email says what the check found, so we can help at once. Or write to support@sheetscroll.com with your device and what you see. We answer within a day.

Questions

Does SheetScroll record me?

No. Sound is analyzed on your device as it arrives and is never recorded, stored or sent.

Do I have to run the setup check?

No. Your first score asks for the microphone and starts listening. Run the check when something seems wrong: tap Fix on the status line, or open Settings → Listening → Check your setup.

Why does Android say the permission is allowed, but SheetScroll hears nothing?

Android’s Mic access switch turns the microphone off for every app and gives them silence, while each app’s permission stays allowed. Turn Mic access on in quick settings.
