The best sheet music app for you, by what you need

Our pick is SheetScroll: the only app here on all seven platforms, with a free reader and no score limit, and with Pro it turns the page by listening, never early. forScore and MobileSheets are paid PDF readers that leave each turn to you. Newzik and Smartleggio also listen, on Apple devices; Enote and Piascore sell score libraries.

Gestures and pedals still leave each turn to you. Listening turns for you, and SheetScroll does it as a page turner who knows the piece would: it turns two beats before the end of the page, never early, and holds the page when two passages sound alike. For more, see Page turning apps compared.

SheetScroll’s web app following a recording of the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, with nothing scripted. The page turns two beats before its end. Sound: an excerpt of “Cello Suite – Bach” by Lud and Schlatts Musical Emporium, conducted by Philip Milman, CC BY 3.0. Score: PDMX, CC0.

The apps, one by one

SheetScroll. Our pick: a sheet music reader with a page turner that listens, on iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows, Linux and the web. It turns two beats before the end of the page, never early, through repeats, endings, D.S. and coda, and finds you again after a stop. It reads PDFs, photos and scans, MusicXML, MuseScore, Guitar Pro, MIDI, ABC, MEI, Humdrum, chord charts and text tabs, and brings a forScore or MobileSheets library across. The reader is free with no score limit; Pro adds listening and automatic page turns.

forScore. A paid PDF reader for Apple devices: Apple Pencil markup, setlists, bookmarks, iCloud sync, and face gestures with forScore Pro. It lists no listening turn. $24.99 once; forScore Pro is an optional subscription ($14.99). Apple devices only.

MobileSheets. A paid library manager on Android, Windows, iPad, iPhone and Mac with no listening turn: up to 20 library fields, MIDI control, annotation layers, PDFs, images, text and ChordPro files, linked tablets and an e-ink edition. $15.99 on Google Play and the App Store; free trials, the Android one limited to 8 songs.

Newzik. iPad, iPhone, Mac and the web. Turns pages by listening with AudioScore, converts PDFs into interactive LiveScores, and syncs annotations across collaborative projects. Free for three scores; Essentials $24.99 once; Premium $9.99 a month or $44.99 a year.

Piascore. A free reader for Apple devices with a $5.99 full upgrade, a score store, and over 130,000 free classical scores through IMSLP. Pages turn with AirTurn pedals, auto-scroll, or the Piascore Air app on an iPhone. Needs iOS 26 or later.

Enote. A large digital library of more than 80,000 scores, including urtext editions, that you can resize and transpose. Its free version, supported by ads, imports and annotates your own scores; the Enote Library is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Smartleggio. A free iPhone and iPad app that turns pages by listening through the microphone or MIDI, reads MusicXML and PDF, and is focused on piano.

How to choose

  1. Start with your devices. If you'll ever want your music on Android, Windows or Linux, rule out Apple-only apps first.
  2. Decide how pages should turn. A pedal or gestures if you want to choose each turn; listening if you want the turn taken off your mind.
  3. Look at your files. PDFs work everywhere. MusicXML, MuseScore, Guitar Pro or ChordPro narrow the field.
  4. Count your scores. A free tier with a small limit is a trial, not a reader for a whole library.
  5. Try it on your hardest piece, with its repeats and its worst page turn. SheetScroll's reader is free, and Pro's yearly plan starts with 2 weeks free.
